State Decision Blocks Drilling for Gas in Catskills

New York state environmental officials said Friday that new regulations governing a controversial method of natural gas drilling would not apply to the state’s only two unfiltered water supplies, a decision that will, in effect, prevent drilling in the Catskills watershed that supplies drinking water to New York City.
