Gayle Horwitz “Wants Asphalt Green to go away”

We have previously reported on the reasons for the delays and cost overruns of the Asphalt Green sports facilities, and how those differed from the explanations provided by the CEO of Battery Park City Authority (BPCA), Gayle Horwitz. We have since learned more from insiders of the Community Board 1 (CB1) and BPCA.
The contract between Asphalt Green and the BPCA was structured under the previous administration of the BPCA prior to Bill Thompson and Gayle Horwitz. It provided for financial support to the non-profit Asphalt Green group in case the facility lost money. If the facility made a profit, that would be shared between the BPCA and Asphalt Green.
We have been told by sources close to the BPCA and also the CB1 that Gayle Horwitz looked at that contract when she took her post and said something similar to, “What the hell is this? Are you crazy?” and that her goal now is to either nullify the contract, or stall the opening until Asphalt Green “Goes away”.
We have also been told by a source that the State of New York (unclear which division or office) is investigating the legality of the various contracts made by the BPCA, such as the Asphalt Green contract.
As of now, there is still no estimated opening date for the facility. In fact, the BPCA has instructed parents to enroll their children in the Uptown Asphalt Green swim classes for the season.
As the bureaucrats bicker, the residents of BPC suffer, once again. BPCA Chairman Bill Thompson abruptly resigned. The fate of the CEO Gayle Horwitz is unclear.
